*************

Friends of Sheffield Cemetery desperately need your financial help in their “Restoring Honor Campaign,” to restore, beautify and maintain this landmark cemetery founded in 1901. It is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Kansas City.

The benefit of the financial support is clearly going to the memories of the deceased and families of those buried there, and not exclusively to a specific synagogue. The burial sites are representative of all the Congregations. Many prominent members of the Kansas City Jewish Community are buried there, including the Asner Family. Ed Asner is coming to Kansas City to do a benefit for Friends of Sheffield to renovate the Historic Sheffield Cemetery Chapel built in 1910.

The level of your contribution can possibly make you eligible to attend a reception with Ed Asner, receive tickets for priority seating, and have your named inscribed on a plaque in the renovated chapel.

Ed is our hometown success story. He is one of the most honored actors in the history of television. Ed will be inducted in the Kansas Hall of Fame on June 15th. The “Restoring Honor Campaign” is in keeping with one of the highest values in the Jewish tradition, Kavod Ha’ Met, honoring the deceased. You won’t want to miss this extraordinary evening with Ed Asner as FDR.

Friends of Sheffield have been doing an outstanding  job to improve the cemetery. To date Friends of Sheffield has received almost $900,000 in pledges. They need an additional $100,000 in pledges in order to renovate the historic Chapel and caretaker apartment. Until the Chapel is complete, there is no place to go in inclement weather for shelter, a service or visitation. Once renovated, it will no longer be an eyesore for the Kansas City Community and surrounding neighborhood.

The grounds have greatly improved with the engagement of a professional lawn company, new landscaping, updated irrigation system, trees trimmed, World War II Memorial restored, debris and refuse cleared for additional burial sites, new cement walks and stairs replaced the broken ones that were a safety hazard, Gravestones aligned, restored wrought iron gates, and additional new hand railings to make the cemetery more accessible.
