Ed Asner, the distinguished and honorable Film and TV star, visited the gravesites of his parent’s on Father’s Day. Asner expressed how impressed he was of the manicured cemetery grounds, and he felt satisfied his parents and family will be well taken care of for the future.
He performed as FDR to a sold out audience with a standing ovation, at the White Theater. The money was raised for the historic Sheffield Cemetery Chapel built in 1910 and perpetual care of the grounds.
Rickie Haith, President of Friends of Sheffield, read a proclamation for Asner from Mayor Joe Reardon, of Greater Kansas City, Kansas andWyandotteCounty. Asner also received a crystal Award as a “Friend of Sheffield Cemetery for Life”, from Friends of Sheffield Cemetery.
A surprise Award was presented to Haith by Barbara Cosner and Susie Milgram, representing the Friends of Sheffield Board of Directors and the Asner Benefit Committee. Milgram commented, it was because of her suggestion to Haith of the deplorable conditions ofSheffieldCemeteryin 2003, that she urged her to please try and get involved in the restoration of this sacred ground. The small BIAV Congregation could not do this alone.
Haith said, “There is still much to be accomplished, but the financial goal was met to start renovations of the Sheffield Chapel. Most of the congregations in the community have family or friends buried atSheffieldCemetery, and raising the money for the cemetery founded in 1901, was a proud community effort.”
Friends of Sheffield are a group of non-affiliated members of BIAV impassioned to maintain the beauty and restoration of the landmark cemetery founded in 2003 and they established a restricted Friends of Sheffield Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation in 2005; seeking monetary donations in 2006. Honoring the deceased is one of the highest values in the Jewish tradition.
For a donation of $250 and over, one can be recognized on a plaque in the renovated chapel. For additional information call, Rickie Haith, President, Friends of Sheffield Cemetery, 913 341 8707, or call, 913 341 0135, website: www.sheffieldcemetery.org
