HISTORY
What is now Pine Grove Cemetery was established in the second half of the 18th century to serve the nearby residents, including a small now-vanished community along Bow Wow Road on the Sheffield/ Egremont town line. The first recorded burial was in 1758. Among the early burials was a Revolutionary War veteran, the first of many veterans to be buried there, including those who served in the Civil War and World Wars I and II.
In 1870, the Curtiss family acquired land adjoining the original cemetery for their own use. It was augmented with additional land in 1876. As time passed, the two were amalgamated and became Pine Grove Cemetery as it is today.
In 2016, additional land became available allowing the trustees to offer plots to the general public, either for traditional burials or for cremains in a newly created Memorial Garden.
Recently, a group of volunteers, with the help of an expert in tombstone restoration, have undertaken a comprehensive program of repair and renovation. Pine Grove today is a lovely and well-maintained place, and steps have been taken to ensure that it will continue to be well-cared for in the future.
